First heard on New York's WOR on Dec. 9, 1940, the show pitted the listening audience against a panel of humor experts. The audience would send in jokes, the good ones were delivered on-air by Donald, and a panel would try to top them with jokes on the same topic. A laugh-meter was used to measure the audience's reaction. Listeners whose joke was read on-air won a cash prize, which was increased if the panel couldn't top the joke.
